Wednesday, 29th May
A day of ancient commemoration of the Maytime Restoration of King Charles ll in 1660.
Membury is the only village in Devon to mark the date in this way. For two hundred years (1664/1859) a service of thanksgiving was held here by decree.
The Royal Oak Bough will once again be hung on the church tower. A procession headed by King Charles ll and Oliver Cromwell with the Exeter Trayned Band and the Banner Men bearing the Royal Oak Banner will start at 6.00 p.m. from the Chestnut Tree and will make its way down to the churchyard where the King will proclaim the Restoration of the Monarchy. The king promises to join Oliver Cromwell and discuss “their little differences” at the Great Feast which then follows in the Village Hall.
Please join us there at 6.45 p.m. for Pulled Pork (or vegetarian option) with various accompaniments and Apple Cake. The bar, run by the MerryMakers, will be serving ale and cider etc. Tickets for the meal are £8.00 for adults and £5.00 for children. Tickets will be available from the Oak Apple Café or from Daniel Lazar (Tel. 01404 881408)
